The WFTV Kay Mellor Screenwriters’ Lab aims to spotlight new writing voices and propel emerging female screenwriters to the next stage of their careers. Hosted at the Arvon Foundation’s The Hurst centre in Shropshire, the 2024 Lab offers a unique opportunity for writers to develop their craft and attract industry interest in their work. Applications for this year closed on Tuesday 28 May 2024.

Kay Mellor was a lifelong champion of women in the industry, both in front of and behind the camera. The annual WFTV Kay Mellor Screenwriters’ Lab honours Kay’s contribution to the industry and continues her legacy in screenwriting by nurturing the next wave of female writing talent.

The fully-funded programme will consist of craft writing masterclasses and workshops led by two course tutors from the film and TV industry, independent writing time to focus and refine a script and a 1-2-1 session with a tutor to offer project guidance. In addition, across the week there will be evening sessions and a special guest from the industry.

This opportunity is for women and people who identify as a woman who are unrepresented by an Agent and do not yet have a professionally produced TV or Film writing credit. You must be at least 18 years old and be a permanent / full time resident of the UK.

To apply, writers must complete the application form and submit a sample script (max 7 pages), plus an accompanying pitch document (max 2 pages)

For full details of the eligibility criteria and application process, visit the Women in Film and TV website.

Applications for this years Kay Mellor Screenwriters Lab have now closed.

I’m delighted that another 13 female writers will benefit from this fantastic opportunity. I can’t wait to read the submissions and meet a new group of inspiring women later in the year. ”
